Lawyer for woman in extremely aggressive RCMP video says client was disbelieved

first_imgHolly MooreAPTN NewsThe lawyer for a British Columbia woman recently shown being interviewed by a West Kelowna RCMP officer after she reported a sexual assault says he believes her interview was really an interrogation.Penticton, B.C., lawyer Michael Patterson represents several claimants in lawsuits against the Ministry of Children and Family Development (MCFD) and against individual social workers Robert Riley Saunders and supervisor Siobhan Stynes. He said he understands that police need to investigate complaints vigorously but this interview was “absolutely shocking.”Patterson said the line of questioning by the officer adds weight to his client’s claim that social workers punished her for reporting the assault as stated in her amended statement of claim from March 2019.The allegations have not been proven in court.“The amended statement of claim mentions that she was disbelieved from the beginning by MCFD,” Patterson said. “If you think my client is lying about being sexually assaulted there are other ways to verify it at the time.”“It was more of a very aggressive interrogation tactic in my view that you reserve for the more serious criminals and not a vulnerable teenager complaining about being sexually assaulted,” he added.“I believe there was a rush to judgment.” In the video, the officer asks the woman about her past sexual history and why she went to the alleged assailant’s house.“Were you at all turned on during this at all? Even a little bit?” the officer asked. “You understand that when a guy tries to have sex with a female and the female is completely unwilling it is very difficult.”The Indigenous teen was just 17 when the video was taken.Read the full story here: ‘Were you turned on by this at all?’: RCMP officer asks Indigenous youth during sexual assault reportShe reported she had been sexual assaulted by an acquaintance to Kelowna RCMP in March 2012.She was in the care of MCFD at the time. The video shows she is alone with the male officer the majority of the time.Patterson points out that MCFD was the youth’s guardian at the time of the interview and someone from the ministry should have been with her.“Where were they?” Patterson asked. “If they were present, a parent was present, some support may have been present. Maybe that person could say, ‘Let’s stop this interview, let’s take a brief break’ or voice their concerns.”The woman, whom APTN News is not identifying, says she felt very alone in the room.“At one point I just broke down,” the woman said in a recent interview. “I knew he didn’t believe me.”Patterson declined to say how the video evidence will influence the civil case going forward.“What I can say is that we don’t believe that a proper investigation was conducted either by the RCMP or in MCFD. I pray that my daughters never have to report anything of this nature to the police. If this is how they treat complainants I find it absolutely shocking.“I am really disgusted by this. I think she is owed an apology,” the lawyer added.APTN asked the RCMP and MCFD for comment.MCFD wrote an email indicating they are working on a response but nothing had been received by the time this story was published. The RCMP has not responded at all.hmoore@aptn.ca@hollymooreaptnlast_img read more

Western Sahara to Be Included in EUMorocco Fisheries Deal

Rabat – Morocco and the EU issued a joint statement Friday at the end of their negotiations saying they had agreed on the content of the fisheries agreement.A diplomatic source told news outlet Yabiladi Friday morning that “a joint communiqué will be released today by the EU and the Ministry in charge to confirm the decision, which includes Morocco’s southern provinces.”The two parties agreed “to maximize the benefits for local populations in the areas concerned, while respecting the principles of sustainable management of fisheries resources and equity.” Morocco and EU committed “to take the necessary measures for the entry into force of the Fisheries Agreement and its Protocol as soon as possible, taking into account their respective procedures.”The two parties agreed to “remain in close contact… during the transition period until this enters into force.”Spain’s Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries, and Food Luis Planas had said earlier Friday that the fisheries agreement between the EU and Morocco “has been settled on the basic aspects.”In an interview with Spanish Radio Nacional, Planas said European fishing boats would not be able to fish in Moroccan waters for “a few weeks or who knows if a few months.” The agreement could be ratified and entered into force as of September in the European Parliament, he said.Planas said he already gave instructions to compensate Spanish ship-owners and crew members during the time they cannot work, following the expiration of the previous EU-Morocco fisheries agreement on July 14.On February 27,  the Court of Justice of the European Union (CJEU) excluded the Western Sahara territorial waters from the fisheries agreement. The ruling complicated the renegotiation of the deal, causing the previous deal, agreed in 2014, to expire before a new deal was reached. The expiration of the fisheries agreement forced EU ship-owners to leave Moroccan waters. Negotiations to renew the agreement started in April. The Moroccan government did not reveal the details of the fisheries agreement with the EU. Government Spokesperson Mustapha El Khalfi said Thursday the government would announce the agreement immediately after signing it. read more

Ethiopia UN study finds femaleheaded households in Southern Tigray destitute

The study, supported by the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), was based on four months of field research in Southern Tigray and was conducted in conjunction with an FAO project aimed at improving food security and nutrition.“Female-headed households, which constitute nearly 30 per cent of this region’s population, are among the most destitute,” said Patricia Howard, a research professor at Wageningen University in the Netherlands.Being a member of a female-headed household in highland Ethiopia means having a 35 per cent chance of being destitute, compared with only an 8 per cent chance if one belongs to a male-headed household, according to the study. It also found that female households are far more likely to be landless and they lack access to plant resources. In a region severely affected by soil erosion, deforestation and overgrazing, the FAO said that such access has been reduced not only because of cultural bias but also due to inadequate enclosing of common grazing lands and woodlots.Since 2001, the broader FAO food security project has implemented a series of initiatives focusing on agriculture, health, education, water and sanitation, the agency said, highlighting also that female-headed households account for 80 per cent of all malnutrition cases in the project area, covering disadvantaged rural zones of Northern Shoa and Southern Tigray.“The objective is to strengthen their access to assets such as land, water resources, skills, and technology – and also to improve their health, their diet and, ultimately, their social status,” said FAO expert Karel Callens. read more

Cambridge student fined for giving feminism talk in Russia during sinister crackdown

The student has been working with the St. Petersburg-based feminist organisation Eve’s Ribs since November 2018.Daria Apakhonchich, an Eve’s Ribs representative, said: “What happened to Harriet in Krasnoyarsk is one of many incidents which reveal the inner workings of our state. “Instead of recriminalising domestic violence, closing the gender pay gap, cracking down on discrimination in employment and higher education, helping victims of domestic, sexual and reproductive violence, fighting arranged child marriages and female genital mutilation, our state spends taxpayers money fighting feminist activists.” Foreign exchange students in Russia have been warned that they are “soft targets” after a Cambridge undergraduate was fined for giving a feminism talk on her year abroad.  Harriet Phillips, 21, was visiting friends in the Siberian city of Krasnoyarsk when she was invited to informally address some 40 people on subjects including the patriarchy and gender stereotypes. But fifteen minutes into the talk she was interrupted by three men – one of whom she claims was an FSB agent – who filmed her speaking then ordered that the computer operating her presentation slides be switched off. The audience was told there would be a “technical break” while the officials from the Federal Migration Service told Miss Phillips she had breached Russian migration law because her tourist visa did not permit her to give educational talks.Miss Phillips, who was on an exchange programme at St. Petersburg State University, insisted it was an open meeting and the talk was simply a warm-up before a group discussion. But she was questioned for four hours and fined 2,000 roubles (£25). One of the officers admitted they would not have detained her if she had been talking about the weather rather than feminism. The city of Krasnoyarsk in Siberia, where Harriet was visiting friends on a tourist visa The city of Krasnoyarsk in Siberia, where Harriet was visiting friends on a tourist visaCredit:Ilya Naymushin/Reuters Miss Phillips was warned by a journalist before her talk began that someone might try to spring a “surprise” on her at the end.  The Modern and Medieval languages student thinks someone had incorrectly told the authorities she was giving a talk in breach of her tourist visa in order to stop her sharing ideas about feminism. She told The Telegraph: “The most likely explanation for what happened is a self-righteous citizen of misogynistic persuasion saw the event advertised online and decided to shut it down by tipping off the Ministry of Internal Affairs.”One of the officers informed me that they wouldn’t have bothered to intervene if the chosen topic of my conversation was the weather.”After being detained, officers asked to see her passport and visa. She was questioned about what sights she was seeing in Russia, and if she was married or had children.Miss Phillips was with officers from the Migration Department of the Ministry of Internal Affairs for four hours before being charged under Article 18.8.2 of the Code of Administrative Offenses of the Russian Federation. The charge states that there is a “discrepancy between stated purpose of entering the Russian Federation and the type of occupation actually carried out”. She said: “I was told that there could be two possible chains of events – either I sign a statement admitting to my guilt, the head of the Migration Department approves it, then I pay a 2,000 rouble fine. This is the second time a foreign exchange student has been rapped by Russian officials for supposed visa violations.Last month a German exchange student was expelled from St. Petersburg State University and fined 4,000 roubles (£50) for interviewing environmental protesters in the Russian city of Chelyabinsk then publishing an article about it on a German news website.Police told Lukas Latz, an Eastern European Studies undergraduate from Berlin, that publishing the article constituted “work” and this violated the terms of his student visa.Lukas had insisted he wrote the article as part of his master’s thesis on environmental activism in Russia. Now Amnesty International has spoke out about exchange students in Russia being treated like criminals, which they say is becoming increasingly common.Natalia Prilutskaya, Amnesty International’s Russia Researcher, said: “We’re seeing more and more cases like this in Russia – where perfectly legitimate activism or even religious observance from overseas students are being treated as criminal offences.“In two recent cases in Nizhnii Novgorod, for example, students from African countries were prosecuted for ‘missionary’ activities in relation to their attendance at a Protestant church.“Overseas students are something of a soft target for the authorities, while the wider context is that anyone in Russia is at risk of persecution if they take part in political protests or activism of any kind.” Want the best of The Telegraph direct to your email and WhatsApp? I agreed to the first option.”Miss Phillips, who is leaving Russia in August and returning to Cambridge for her final year in October, paid the fine the next day.But her ordeal was not over, as she has since received torrents of abuse on Russian social network VKontakte for daring to talk about feminism. The insulting comments included: ‘Take your feminism back to Gayurope, you witch’; ‘Go home you swine. If I ever get my hands on you…’’; ‘You can take your Gayuropean values and f*** right off! Go and live with your tolerance’; ‘They should have deported her straight away’;  ‘It’s obvious she’s a lesbian’;  ‘She needs to be sent back to Scotland and banned from reentering Russia… f*** right off you spy’.Miss Phillips added: “I’m incredibly disappointed that a highly interesting exchange of thoughts and ideas was not able to take place.”I am speechless with anger that the Russian state chooses to squander valuable time and energy chasing after a Scottish feminist, as the Russian internet has now dubbed me, instead of tackling the endemic violence which grips the country.” read more

You can rent a RED Epic camera for 1600 a day

first_imgIf you’ve been following the video camera market for the past few years then you’ve almost certainly heard of the RED Epic camera. The Epic handles both digital video and still images and is one of the most respected cameras in the business. Unfortunately this kind of quality costs a pretty penny, or, more accurately, 5.8 million pretty pennies. Yep, the RED Epic-M package — complete with the Epic-M brain, Bomb EVF, 5-inch LCD, and more — sells for $58,000.Of course, you don’t necessarily need to buy the RED Epic to get your hands on it, you can always rent. Borrow Lenses, purveyors of all sorts of fine camera equipment, are offering up the Epic-M kit at $1600 a day. Or you can rent it out for up to a month for $17500, if you have an extended project that needs to be tackled.Speaking of projects, check out the video below. That’s the sort of thing the Epic is capable of, which is to say “extremely impressive”. Of course you won’t be able to shoot video just because you laid out the cash to rent the kit, but you can’t exactly shoot video like that without it either. The Epic-M shoots video at up to 5K resolution, with high speeds shooting ranging up to 200 fps at 2K or 150 fps at 5K. The rental package for this impressive rig doesn’t just include the camera body and the odd lens, you also get gear like a 1.8-inch 128GB SSD storage device and a proprietary camera remote, plus you get a case to put it all in. Ultimately it’s a lot of money, but you get some very cool toys to play with.Borrow Lenses also has a number of compatible lenses you can rent to use with the Epic kit. Any of the PL mount Zeiss lenses they have in stock should work, such as the Zeiss Compact Prime CP.2 25mm cinema lens. And some good news: these go for only $99 a day.More at Borrow Lenseslast_img read more

DARPA demos UAV using Android and ADAPT ground sensors

first_imgA few years ago DARPA put out a call for experienced mobile app developers to come work on a project called the Adaptable Sensor System, or simply “ADAPT.” All the organization would say at the time was the project related to designing new types of sensors that leveraged mobile technology. Now we have the first video featuring one of these sensors in action, and it’s in an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV).ADAPT is an effort to design a versatile sensor framework that can be used in various settings, but will focus on intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR) designs… you know, for sneaky stuff. This means that a UAV test is particularly appropriate, but why the mobile app developers? Well, ADAPT turns out to be based on a customized build of Android. In DARPA’s test, a simple quadcopter UAV is using the ADAPT sensor to automatically track its distance from the ground. The unattended ground sensor (UGS), which is built on an ADAPT core, is relaying flight instructions to the UAV. The standard control interface was actually removed entirely for the test. The UGS is a small cylinder housing the specialized sensor kit. An ADAPT core running Android is plugged into the sensor package to operate the vehicle. DARPA believes this demo could lead to ADAPT being integrated into any number of ISR designs.ADAPT could lead to faster and more efficient deployment of technology in the military, but the sensors could find their way into consumer electronics at some point as well. For now, DARPA is considering designing more reference platforms to show what ADAPT cores can do in other sensor situations.last_img read more

Global financial crisis bites small and micro businesses hardest

first_imgNearly 8 out of 10 small and micro businesses have suffered from a decline in turnover and delays in customer payments in Athens as a result of the financial crisis, according to a survey released by the Athens Chamber of Small and Micro Businesses (BEA) last week. The figures confirmed fears expressed by BEA’s members in late 2008 and showed that small and micro businesses were mostly affected by the economic crisis. The survey was conducted on a sample of 480 business-members of BEA in July.Eighty-four percent of BEA’s members reported a decline in turnover compared with 2008, while only 4 percent reported an increase in turnover. Average turnover fell by 35 percent so far, compared with a decline of 33 percent a year earlier. One of the most significant problems facing businesses in the sector was a delay in debt payments, with 56 percent of them saying payment time was more than three months, while 16 percent said payment time was more than six months.Forty percent of businesses expected to end the year with losses, with only 2 percent saying they would end the year with higher profits. One in four respondents said they have already cut workforce in the last six months, and another one in five said they could cut their workforce in the future. Thirty-eight percent of small and micro businesses expect the economy to exit the crisis and recover by the end of 2010, while another 38 percent said they expected the first signs of recovery after 2011. 1st of 9 bodies from AirAsia crash identified

first_imgSURABAYA, Indonesia — A passenger aboard AirAsia Flight 8501 became the first victim of the crash to be returned to her family Thursday, one of many painful reunions to come, as search crews struggled against wind and heavy rain to find more than 150 people still missing. Hayati Lutfiah Hamid’s identity was confirmed by fingerprints and other means, said Col. Budiyono of East Java’s Disaster Victim Identification Unit. Her body, in a dark casket topped with flowers, was handed over to family members during a brief ceremony at a police hospital in Surabaya, the Indonesian city where the plane took off. A relative cried as she placed both hands against the polished wood. The coffin was then taken to a village and lowered into a muddy grave, following Muslim obligations requiring bodies to be buried quickly. An imam said a simple prayer as about 150 people gathered in the drizzling rain, and red flowers were sprinkled over the mound of wet dirt topped by a small white tombstone. The Airbus A320 crashed into the Java Sea on Sunday with 162 people on board. Nine bodies have been recovered so far, including two on Thursday. Remains are being sent initially to Pangkalan Bun, the closest town on Borneo island, before being transported to Surabaya, Indonesia’s second-largest city, where Flight 8501 had taken off.In the thick of Indonesia’s rainy season, the weather has frequently prevented helicopters and divers from operating while strong sea currents have kept debris moving.last_img read more

Watch Tenth Doctor Say Goodbye Logan Style

first_img HBO Max Scores Exclusive ‘Doctor Who’ Streaming RightsJo Tro Do Plo Plo No: ‘Doctor Who’ Welcomes Back Familiar Monster Stay on target Trade his sonic screwdriver for adamantium claws and regeneration process for self-healing powers, and you may find the Doctor and Wolverine aren’t so different.YouTuber VG934 makes a case for the kindred characters in a reimagining of Doctor Who‘s iconic “The End of Time,” styled like the cinematic Logan trailer. The video (below) expertly cuts the two-part BBC special broadcast with the Johnny Cash song “Hurt,” used to depict exhaustion, pain, and fear in the latest X-Men franchise story.Published in early December, the fan-made “trailer” equates an epic Time Lord battle with a near-future dystopia—each tale marking the end of a beloved personality: David Tennant’s final regular appearance as the Tenth Doctor, Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine swan song.Originally broadcast on Dec. 25, 2009, and Jan. 1, 2010, the Doctor Who Christmas/New Year’s special focused heavily on the Master (John Simms) and part-time companion Wilfred Mott (Bernard Cribbons), with appearances from a number of familiar faces (including Timothy Dalton as the narrator and Time Lord President). Like so many other holiday productions, the program ends with the Doctor’s regeneration, introducing Matt Smith and his chin.VG934’s clever revamp, however, isn’t the first appropriation of 20th Century Fox’s movie trailer. In October, Theta Sigma Productions released an adaptation of 2013 Christmas special “The Time of the Doctor,” set to the backdrop of Cash’s country hit. YouTube user Gallifreyforever97 did the same with series nine finale trilogy “Face the Raven”/”Heaven Sent”/”Hell Bent.”But it doesn’t take video-editing software and too much free time to recognize the similarities between the Time Lord and the X-Man. Two loners desperate for a friend, both have known love and loss; the Doctor and James “Logan” Howlett escaped a world at war to become heroes (or antiheroes, in the case of Wolverine).Logan is in theaters now; season 10 of Doctor Who returns to TV screens on April 15.last_img read more

Chrome launch sites in borderless windows

first_imgChrome: launch sites in borderless windows by Martin Brinkmann on August 27, 2017 in Google Chrome – 14 commentsThe Google Chrome web browser comes with options to launch sites in borderless windows to maximize the display space for these websites. The default version of Google Chrome displays website content and interface elements. Interface elements are the address bar and toolbar icons, and the tab bar. Chrome includes no options to display a sidebar or status bar, or any other toolbar. You may configure specific websites to open in a borderless window when opened in Chrome. This can be useful to maximize screen estate. Chrome supports several options to display sites in an exclusive window: you may run Chrome using the –kiosk parameter to get rid of all browser chrome elements and display only the site in question on the screen. Another option that you have is to run Chrome with the -app parameter instead to only display a title bar but no address bar or tab bar.Another difference between kiosk and app is that the former runs in full screen mode while the latter in window mode.Kiosk ModeYou may use the –kiosk parameter to run specific sites in kiosk mode using Chrome. Kiosk mode is a fullscreen mode that displays no browser chrome; no address bar, no title bar and no tab bar. There are no buttons to close the Chrome window which means that you need to use other means such as Alt-F4 to close the browser window. To use Chrome in Kiosk mode, run the browser with the parameter –kiosk SiteURL, e.g. –kiosk https://www.ghacks.net/. You may add the parameter to a shortcut permanently to always open the site in question in kiosk mode when executed. The following instructions are for Windows:Right-click on the Chrome shortcut in the taskbar, right-click on Google Chrome again when the menu pops up, and select properties from the second menu that opens.Append –kiosk https://www.ghacks.net/ to the target field. Arm unveils its Client CPU roadmap designed for alwayson alwaysconnected devices

first_imgArm, the world’s leading semiconductor IP company, for the first time have disclosed its forward-looking compute performance data and a CPU roadmap for their Client Line of Business from now through 2020. Every year they introduce new world-class CPU designs that have delivered double-digit gains in instructions-per-clock (IPC) performance since 2013. Their aim is to enable the PC industry to overcome their reliance on Moore’s law and deliver a high-performance, always-on, always-connected laptop experience. Key highlights of this client compute CPU roadmap Arm’s client roadmap 2018: Earlier this year, the launch of Cortex-A76 was announced. It delivers laptop-class performance while maintaining the power efficiency of a smartphone. We can expect hearing more on the first commercial devices on 7nm towards the end of the year and coming months. 2019: Arm will be delivering the CPU codenamed ‘Deimos’ to their partners, which is a successor to Cortex-A76. ‘Deimos’ is optimized for the latest 7nm nodes and is based on DynamIQ technology. DynamIQ redefines multi-core computing by combining the big and LITTLE CPUs into a single, fully-integrated cluster with many new and enhanced benefits in power and performance for mobile to infrastructure. With these added improvements, it is expected to deliver a 15+ percent increase in compute performance. 2020: The CPU codenamed ‘Hercules’ will be available to Arm partners. Same as ‘Deimos’, it is also based on DynamIQ technology and will be optimized for both 5nm and 7nm nodes. It is expected to improve power and area efficiency by 10 percent in addition to increase in the compute performance. What does this roadmap tell us? Take advantage of the disruptive innovation 5G will bring to all client devices. The innovations from their silicon and foundry partners will help Arm SoCs (System on Chip) to breakthrough the dominance of x86 and gain substantial market share in Windows laptops and Chromebooks over the next five years. The Arm Artisan Physical IP platform and Arm POP IP will help partners get every bit of performance-per-watt they can out of their SoCs on whatever process node they choose. This latest roadmap highlights that Arm is bringing new innovations and features to the PC industry with its annual cadence design. They will be talking more about their latest product releases and ecosystem developments at Arm TechCon which will be held in October this year. Longcherished award for sailor Kontides

first_imgCypriot sailor Pavlos Kontides has been named Rolex World Sailor of the Year 2018 as the stars of sailing were recognised at the 2018 World Sailing Awards in Florida, USA.“There are lot of great legends in our sport on that trophy. Since I was 14, I’ve been dreaming of winning that award,” said Kontides, speaking after receiving the award.“I used to write it on lots of pieces of paper that it’s what I wanted. Maybe it sounded a bit too far away, maybe it was too big of a dream, but here I am today.”The Laser sailor won his first World Championship title in Croatia in 2017 and made it a double less than a year later in Denmark.Kontides became the first Cypriot athlete ever to win an Olympic medal after taking second place in the London Olympics in 2012.“I managed to achieve this from a really small island in the middle of the Mediterranean, so I hope this achievement will inspire a lot of other young sailors to prove you should dream big and not be too scared to chase it.”Kontides also competed in the 2016 Olympics in which he placed seventh and the 2008 Olympics obtaining the 13th place. In the same year, he won gold at the World Junior Championships and in 2009 he won two silver medals in World Cups and a bronze in the European Men’s Championship. You May LikeUltimate Pet Nutrition Nutra Thrive SupplementAdd This One Thing To Your Dog’s Food To Help Them Be HealthierUltimate Pet Nutrition Nutra Thrive SupplementUndoLuxury Crossover SUV I Search AdsThese SUVs Are The Cream Of The Crop. Cyprus gas to be used domestically and for regional exports

first_imgBy Elias HazouNatural gas from the Aphrodite gas field can be channelled to Cyprus for domestic energy consumption as well as to regional exports, the head of the Cyprus Hydrocarbons Company (CHC) Toula Onoufriou said on Tuesday.Approximately one billion cubic meters (bcm) a year would be sufficient to cover the island’s energy needs, with the bulk of the gas diverted to exports, the official told the Eastern Mediterranean Gas Conference. The Aphrodite play, operated by Texas-based Noble Energy, holds an estimated 4.5 trillion cubic feet (tcf) of gas.Onoufriou said that talks are underway between the government and the Block 12 partners, Noble and Delek, for selling the Aphrodite gas and exploring regional markets for export.Last weekend the CHC and its Egyptian counterpart, EGAS, signed a memorandum of understanding for a technical study into a subsea pipeline and onshore infrastructure options for exporting the gas to Egypt.Currently Egypt faces fuel shortages and Cyprus can satisfy part of these needs, Onoufriou noted. On diverting some of the Aphrodite gas to the domestic energy grid, she said authorities and the Block 12 partners are examining the method as well as timeline for piping the gas from floating platforms.Financing was one of the aspects being looked at, she added, and there were various possibilities, including investment from third parties. There has been a great deal of interest from organisations in investing in the facilities, the CHC head said, but did not elaborate.Speaking to reporters on the sidelines of the conference, John Burley, Vice President of Business Development for BG Group Egypt, said the company’s facilities there can absorb gas from both Aphrodite and Israel’s Leviathan field, provided that part of this gas would be channelled to domestic demand in Egypt. The CHC has been holding talks with BG Egypt for the possible export of Cypriot gas to the company’s LNG facilities in Idku.BG Group recently signed a provisional deal with two Egyptian state-owned gas corporations. The company has agreed to invest $4 billion (€3.4 billion) into a joint venture to supply domestic gas in Egypt and for export to the group’s international customers. In exchange, the Egyptian government has committed to repay BG the approximately $900 million that it owes and to enter talks to agree a better price for domestic gas.You May LikeLivestlyChip And Joanna’s $18M Mansion Is Perfect, But It’s The Backyard Everyone Is Talking AboutLivestlyUndoPopularEverythingColorado Mom Adopted Two Children, Months Later She Learned Who They Really ArePopularEverythingUndoYahoo SearchYou’ve Never Seen Luxury Like This On A Cruise Ship. editors@timecomDonald Trump’s speech Thursday night was riddled with bracing statistics about crime immigration jobs and debt each designed to speak to the real fears and concerns of Americans He did a careful job of making sure the facts in his speech were cited to published sources and the campaign published an annotated draft But many of the facts taken alone failed to fully describe the nation’s condition Here’s a look at the fuller context for some of the newly minted Republican presidential candidate’s claims “Homicides last year increased by 17% in Americas 50 largest cities Thats the largest increase in 25 years In our nations capital killings have risen by 50% They are up nearly 60% in nearby Baltimore” The raw numbers are true according to a Washington Post analysis But they paint a misleading picture by looking at 2015 in isolation Since Obama took office homicides have actually dropped 13% a continuation of a 25-year trend spanning all large cities across the US since the early 1990s In 1991 an average of 27 people were killed in large cities every year; in 2015 the average was 11 Criminologists fiercely disagree over whether the recent spike in homicides is a statistical anomaly or the result of short-term factors or whether they point toward a more distressing longer-term trend “The number of police officers killed in the line of duty has risen by almost 50% compared to this point last year” Again that number is strictly true but it lacks context If you exclude the vast majority of officers who are killed by illnesses heart attacks or accidents drowning weather car and motorcycle crashes an average of about 50 to 60 officers are killed on-duty every year In 2014 60 police officers were killed by gunfire assault or explosives In 2015 56 police officers were killed in the same way So far in 2016 42 officers have been killed by gunfire or assault According to data compiled by the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund between 2009 and 2015 under Obama there were 17% fewer police officer fatalities that there were between 2002 and 2008 under George W Bush “Nearly 180000 illegal immigrants with criminal records ordered deported from our country are tonight roaming free to threaten peaceful citizens” Tens of thousands of undocumented immigrants do indeed have “criminal convictions” according to federal data but many of them are for crimes resulting from being in the country illegally like breaking immigration laws evading deportation notices or driving without a license There’s no data on murders committed by illegal immigrants The Obama Administration’s Department of Homeland Security has come under criticism from the left for presiding over the deportation of more undocumented immigrants than any other president in history according to a Reuters analysis of Immigration and Customs Enforcement data In 2013 the Department of Homeland Security deported 438421 people and in 2014 it deported 414481 morenearly 60000 more than the previous record-high in 2008 under Bush “Fifty-eight percent of African American youth are not employed” It’s true that 58% of African-American youth are “not employed” But it’s not true that 58% of African-American youth are unemployed From an economic perspective that two-letter difference is significant The first statistic includes all the youth a term that the Bureau of Labor Statistics defines as 16- to 24-year-olds who are in school taking care of their families or otherwise engaged in the economy The second which includes only those who are looking for work but can’t find it those who are unemployed is closer to 21% compared with about 103% of young whites In July 2015 there were 288 million unemployed youth down from 34 million a year earlier according to BLS data “Two million more Latinos are in poverty today than when the President took his oath of office less than eight years ago” Rapid population growth among the Latino population both from a higher natural birth rate and immigration undergirds this number According to the Pew Research Center’s analysis of 2013 Census Bureau figures Hispanics have actually seen their economic prospects improve since 2008 In fact they are “the only major racial or ethnic group to see a statistically significant decline in its poverty rate” helping to fuel the nation’s first decline in poverty rates in a decade “Another 14 million people have left the workforce entirely” The Trump campaign’s annotated draft cites a CNS News article that doesn’t appear to repeat that statistic Instead it says that “a record 94708000 Americans were not in the labor force in May” of this year which bears out in the Bureau of Labor Statistics data The current labor force participation rate at 627% is indeed low but it doesn’t take into account demographic changes: the baby-boom generation is in the process of retiring and is therefore leaving the workforce voluntarily while the boomers’ younger counterparts Millennials are not yet through college and therefore out of the workforce voluntarily too “Household incomes are down more than $4000 since the year 2000” American households have shrunk by roughly 34% since the late 1990s as families have had fewer children and more people now live alone so comparisons of household incomes across that time period reflect different household needs If a household made up of four people earned the equivalent of $50000 in 2000 it was not necessarily better off than a three-person household earning $48000 in 2016 Contact us at
