Foreign producers oilsands sales boost Calgary companies Q3 results

first_imgCALGARY – Two Calgary-based oilsands producers reported huge production gains in their most recent quarters after spending billions of dollars last spring to buy assets from foreign companies anxious to exit the northern Alberta heavy oil resource.Canadian Natural Resources Ltd. (TSX:CNQ) said Thursday that for the first time, its output averaged more than one million barrels of oil equivalent per day during its third quarter ended Sept. 30. Production was up 41 per cent from the year-earlier period, thanks mainly to its deal to buy most of the Canadian oilsands mining assets of Royal Dutch Shell for about $11.1 billion.Meanwhile, Cenovus Energy Inc. (TSX:CVE) reported more than doubling its output to 590,851 barrels of oil equivalent per day, up from 273,405 a year ago, as it absorbed Canadian assets of Houston-based ConocoPhillips, including its half interest in jointly owned oilsands assets, purchased for $17.7 billion. The third quarter was the first full quarter since the two deals were completed. The similarities didn’t extend to the strategic level, however, as Cenovus continued to focus on divesting assets to pay down debt and Canadian Natural announced it had achieved “the final step” in its transition to a sustainable business model with plenty of free cash to boost returns to shareholders and power potential acquisitions.Thursday’s report was the last for Cenovus president and CEO Brian Ferguson, who is to be replaced by former TransCanada Corp. executive Alex Pourbaix next week, although he will remain an adviser until next March. On a conference call, Ferguson said it had been a “great honour and privilege” to lead the company since it was launched in December 2009.Ferguson said the company is well advanced in identifying “non-core” conventional oil and gas assets in the ConocoPhillips’ portfolio to be sold before year-end to reach its goal of between $4 billion and $5 billion in asset sales. It has already raised $2.8 billion through sales of three asset packages — including the $975-million sale of its Pelican Lake heavy oil assets in northern Alberta to Canadian Natural, which closed at the end of September. It expects to sell its stake in a Weyburn, Sask., oilfield in the current quarter, a deal analysts have estimated will bring in about $1 billion. On its conference call, Canadian Natural CEO Steve Laut said the company is in a “strong and enviable position” after completing the construction of an 80,000-barrel-per-day expansion of its Horizon oilsands mine in October.Horizon is expected to gradually ramp up to about 240,000 bpd of synthetic crude output by mid-December on the way to its rated capacity of 250,000 bpd. Both oilsands companies reported stronger financial operating results on higher commodity prices and lower costs in the third quarter.Cenovus had a net loss of $69 million or six cents per share, due mainly to a writedown of $440 million on the Pelican Lake asset sale, compared with a loss of $251 million or 30 cents per share in the same quarter last year.Canadian Natural had a net profit of $684 million or 56 cents per share, versus a net loss of $326 million or 29 cents in the third quarter of last year. It said it had paid down $350 million in debt during the quarter.Follow @HealingSlowly on Twitter.last_img read more

Georgia UN calls for probe into use of force against antiGovernment protesters

Anti-Government protests turned violent last Thursday, when police reportedly used tear gas, water cannons and rubber bullets to disperse a rally in the Georgian capital. “We fully support the call by the Georgian Public Defender (the Ombudsman) for a comprehensive, effective and impartial investigation into the actions of the police,” Rupert Colville, the spokesperson for the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR), told reporters in Geneva.“We stress that according to international law, the use of force shall be exercised to the minimum necessary and in line with the principles of necessity and proportionality. Attacks on physical integrity involving all sides should be promptly and duly investigated,” he stated.OHCHR also called on all sides to refrain from violence and to act in line with national laws and international standards on freedom of assembly.Mr. Colville noted that the Ombudsman has compiled a list of 162 people detained in the aftermath of the protests and that many of them have injuries of various sorts sustained in the dispersal of the demonstrations. He stressed that individuals who have been arrested and detained should be afforded their rights in accordance with international human rights standards. “In particular they must receive adequate medical treatment, be free from torture and ill-treatment, know the reasons for their arrests, be able to exercise fully their right to legal counsel and the right to challenge the lawfulness of the arrest and detention,” he stated. 31 May 2011The United Nations human rights office today voiced concern about the disproportionate use of force against anti-Government protesters in Tbilisi, Georgia, last week and called for a probe into the actions of the police. read more

Bonn New initiatives in energy water and agriculture sectors announced at UN

In the water sector, the majority of national climate plans with an adaptation component prioritize action on water, yet financing would need to triple to $295 billion per year to meet such targets, said experts on Friday. “Sustainable use of water for multiple purposes must remain a way of life and needs to be at the center of building resilient cities and human settlements and ensuring food security in a climate change context,” said Mariet Verhoef-Cohen, President of the Women for Water Partnership. The international water community co-signed on Friday what it called a “nature based solution declaration” to encourage the use of natural systems in managing healthy water supplies. Around 40 per cent of the world’s population will face water shortages by 2050, accelerating migration and triggering conflict, while some regions could lose up to six per cent of their economic output, unless it is better managed. “Involving both women and men in decision making and integrated water resources initiatives leads to better sustainability, governance and efficiency”, said Ms. Verhoef-Cohen. Mariet Verhoef-Cohen, President of the organization Women for Water Partnership, at the UN Climate Conference (COP 23) in Bonn, Germany. Photo: UN News/Jerome Bernard New commitments and initiatives in energy, water and agriculture sectors were announced on Friday, at the United Nations Climate Conference (COP23) in Bonn, Germany, under the auspices of the Marrakech Partnership for Global Climate Action to help implement the Paris Agreement. The Marrakech Partnership aims at catalyzing greater climate action by public and private stakeholders as the Paris Agreement, adopted in 2015, calls on countries to combat climate change by limiting the rise of global temperature below 2 degrees Celsius and strive not to exceed 1.5 degrees Celsius.Cleaner energy developmentIn Bonn, new initiatives were announced to push forward the transition to renewable energy and to show that more ambitious clean energy development can quickly become a bigger part of national climate plans submitted under the Paris Agreement. “With the price of renewable and storage technologies tumbling, and greater understanding on how to set the policy table for a cleaner energy mix and more integrated energy planning, the question before decision makers is, why wait?” said Rachel Kyte, Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General and CEO, Sustainable Energy for All (SE4All). Among key announcements, the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) released a new report, Untapped Potential for Climate Action: Renewable Energy in Nationally Determined Contributions, which suggests there is substantial scope for countries to cost-effectively increase renewable energy. The Climate Group also announced new members to its recently launched EV100 campaign, a major new global electric transport initiative designed to make electric vehicles “the new normal.” And 13 countries with the International Energy Agency (IEA) announced this week the launch of a new multi-year, 30 million euros plan to support clean energy transitions around the world.Investing faster and further in agricultural climate actionRegarding agriculture, leaders and experts said that investing faster and further in agricultural climate action and to support the sustainable livelihoods of small-scale farmers will unlock much greater potential to curb emissions and protect people against climate change. “Countries now have the opportunity to transform their agricultural sectors to achieve food security for all through sustainable agriculture and strategies that boost resource-use efficiency, conserve and restore biodiversity and natural resources, and combat the impacts of climate change,” said René Castro, Assistant-Director General of the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO). In the livestock sector, for example, FAO estimates that emissions could be readily reduced by about 30 percent with the adoption of best practices. FAO released a new Sourcebook on Climate-Smart Agriculture. It recommends scaling up public and private climate finance flows to agriculture; spurring public-private partnerships; strengthening a multi-sector and multi-stakeholder dialogue; investing in knowledge and information; and building capacity to address barriers to implement climate action.Managing healthy water supplies read more

Michel Platini thinks VAR is unjust

You take a moment that lasts a millisecond and stretch it out to 15 seconds,” he told L’Equipe as quoted by Gianluca Di Marzio.gareth southgate, englandEngland and Bulgaria on a collision course over racism George Patchias – September 13, 2019 England’s concerns over racism in Bulgaria has sparked a furious row.Recently England manager Gareth Southgate expressed his concern over racist abuse being aimed at…“Take the World Cup final, was there a handball on Croatia? At normal speed, and with even a normal replay, definitely no.”“But with the super slow motion, the referee sees something and awards the penalty. Where is the justice? It is simply an interpretation.”He also took a time to talk about Cristiano Ronaldo going to Juventus, saying he “found it odd that at 33 years old he would leave ‘his’ Real Madrid, which has won three Champions League, to start a new challenge.”“But was it Juventus who went after him, or his agent Mendes who pursued Juventus? I am not able to fully understand this deal,” he concluded.last_img read more

New Study Released on Addressing Murder in The Bahamas

first_imgFacebook Twitter Google+LinkedInPinterestWhatsApp Related Items: Facebook Twitter Google+LinkedInPinterestWhatsApp#Bahamas, October 21, 2017 – Nassau – Director of the National Anti-Drug Secretariat (NADS) within the Ministry of National Security, and Superintendent of Police Dr. Chaswell A. Hanna on October 18, 2017 announced the launch of a new study on murders entitled, “Solutions to the Murder Problem,” under the auspices of NADS in partnership with the Royal Bahamas Police Force and the University of The Bahamas.“This study had three main objectives,” Dr. Hanna said at the launch, held at the Churchill Building.   “Firstly, Chapters 1 through 6 presented a descriptive analysis of murder incidents that occurred within The Commonwealth of The Bahamas between 2010 and 2015 – 719 murders.   During this study period, a host of variables including incidence, victims, suspects, motives, detection and conviction were collected and analyzed from case files and local criminal justice databases.”Secondly, Dr. Hanna said, Chapters 7 and 8 presented a comprehensive review of literature on the issue of homicide prevention and ways by which detection rates may be improved.“Best practices and innovative preventative programs devised and/or adopted by law enforcement agencies throughout the world were also shared and examined,” Dr. Hanna said.   “Careful attention was given to the results of scholarly evaluations of such programs to determine the extent of their effectiveness.”Finally, he noted, Chapter 9 presents a new Murder Reduction Strategy for The Bahamas based on the findings of this study.“This strategic plan proposes the introduction of several new police initiatives, policy adjustments, constitutional amendments and community-based programs to reduce murder and other violent crimes,” he pointed out.   “The strategy gives evidence-based solutions to policy makers which they can use to guide decisions.”Dr. Hanna said the some of the “more interesting” findings included the following: The Bahamas’ murder rate ranks 13th out of a survey of 142 nations; murders are heavily concentrated in communities which fall below the average household income line; and that persons involved in criminal activity are more likely to be murdered than persons who are not involved in criminal activity. The study also found that 19% of murder victims were on bail; 39% of persons charged with murder were on bail; when compared to the United States, local detection rates tended to be higher; and that there are over 200 murder cases still pending trial for the study period.Juries, Dr. Hanna said, returned a guilty verdict in 76% of the cases presented to them for deliberation, and most sentences for murder convictions included 31-40 years imprisonment.“Recommendations offered in the Murder Reduction Strategy are based on the findings of this study and associated research and may not necessarily reflect the views, opinions or positions of the Ministry of National Security or the Royal Bahamas Police Force,” Dr. Hanna pointed out.He noted that the Murder Reduction Strategy is comprised of the following seven key action points: Punish the Most Violent Offenders; Stop Illegal Guns Entering The Bahamas; Create a DNA Forensic Laboratory; Dismantle Criminal Gangs; Dissuade Youths from Using Drugs; Increase Economic Opportunities for at-Risk Youth; and Increase Educational Achievement.“While some of these recommendations may raise some eyebrows, presenting them provides a space for policy makers to take a fresh look to this national issue,” Dr. Hanna said. “Finally, we are happy that this study adds to the relatively small, but growing, body of local research, which can be furthered explored by other researchers at the University of The Bahamas.”Dr. Hanna stated that the following Friday, October 20, 2017, he would be presenting the details of the Strategy at the University of the Bahamas’ Harry C. Moore Library at 12:30pm. This event, he noted, would be free and open to the general public.“A free copy of the study can be downloaded at our website www.bahamas.gov.bs/nads and the University of The Bahamas’ website,” he added.By: Eric RosePhoto captions:  NASSAU, The Bahamas – Director of the National Anti-Drug Secretariat (NADS) within the Ministry of National Security and Superintendent of Police Dr. Chaswell A. 2 jailhouse informants say Fairbanks 4 talked on crime

first_imgMembers of the Fairbanks Four made incriminating statements in jail. That’s according to two men who served time with George Frese, Kevin Pease, Marvin Roberts and Eugene Vent, the men known as the Fairbanks Four, challenging their convictions for the October 1997 beating death of John Hartman.Download AudioJohn Hartman’s older brother Chris Kelly testified Thursday at an ongoing post-conviction relief hearing for the Fairbanks Four. Kelly recounted confronting one of the men convicted of beating his brother to death, Eugene Vent, in jail shortly after the crime.“He said, ‘We didn’t know it was your little brother.’ And I said, ‘I don’t care whose little brother it is, you don’t go doing that type of stuff to people.’ And I went off on them and the guards came in and took me out of there,” Kelly said.Kelly adds that testimony heard this month indicating others are responsible for his brother’s death, have not swayed him.Other testimony Thursday included recorded comments from another man who served time with members of the Fairbanks Four. James Wright recounts the men making note of newspaper articles about the Hartman murder.“And they would laugh and they would glorify the fact that, ‘oh, we’re in the paper again. Look.’ You know, it was like they were proud of being accepted as murderers into the prison society or whatever,” Wright said. Also Thursday, former Fairbanks police detective Leonard Brown testified about the lack on any physical evidence tying the Fairbanks Four to the Hartman beating, emphasizing that Hartman only bled a small amount, and that cold weather prevented fingerprints.last_img read more

Trump signs order against Obamacare

first_imgTrump signs an executive order on Affordable Care Act at Oval Office in Washington on Friday. ReutersUS president Donald Trump on Friday signed an executive order aimed at limiting the “burden” of the Obamacare health law that the incoming US leader has vowed to repeal.During the signing in the Oval Office, Trump’s chief of staff Reince Priebus described the order as aimed at “minimizing the economic burden” of the 2010 Affordable Care Act, “pending repeal.”Doing away with Barack Obama’s signature domestic achievement is a top priority for Republicans, who control both chambers of Congress and, since Trump’s inauguration Friday, the White House. In their view, Obamacare-which aimed to ensure healthcare for the millions of Americans who are neither covered by public insurance, nor by their employers-marked a costly drift toward socialized, European-style medical care.Until lawmakers are able to repeal Obamacare, “it is imperative for the executive branch to… take all actions consistent with law to minimize the unwarranted economic and regulatory burdens of the Act, and prepare to afford the States more flexibility and control to create a more free and open healthcare market,” the executive order said. The order instructs the US health secretary and other departments and agencies to “exercise all authority and discretion available to them to waive, defer, grant exemptions from, or delay the implementation of any provision or requirement of the Act” that imposes a fiscal burden or other cost on a state, on consumers, on insurers or on a range of healthcare providers.Trump has pledged to start undoing the divisive health law on his first day in office, while also declaring it inconceivable that poor Americans are locked out of coverage. The president has said the law should be repealed and replaced “simultaneously,” a stiff challenge given the complexity of America’s vast health care system.Obamacare added more than 20 million people onto insurance rolls, lowering the percentage of Americans without coverage from 16 percent in 2010 to 8.9 percent last year.Republicans are pledging a repeal of Obamacare-which has been blamed for sharply rising insurance premiums-and rapid votes on a replacement bill in order to prevent gaps in coverage and reassure a restless insurance industry.Only one third of the US population is covered by public insurance-either Medicare, for those over age 65, or Medicaid for the poorest Americans.Half of all Americans are insured through their employers, according to the Kaiser Family Foundation, while about seven percent are covered through the so-called individual market, which serves those who are self-employed or are employees without coverage through work.Obama’s solution rested largely on requiring that everyone be insured, and providing federal subsidies to those who cannot afford coverage.Republicans deemed the first requirement too coercive, and the latter too costly.last_img read more

The battle against piracy continues to be a “cultural issue that needs to be addressed,” Williamson continued, “to help people understand that piracy is theft and it financially impacts everyone who works in the industry.”Ultimately, most pirated copies of a movies “are nearly unwatchable,” Bock said. “Those that can afford to attend movies will likely seek out ‘Endgame’ in theaters to enjoy the complete experience.”Disney has not responded to requests for comment on the movie’s piracy.Interest in pirated versions of “Avengers: Endgame” has soared in the last three days, with Google searches for “avengers endgame torrent” peaking at around 5 a.m. ET on April 26, according to stats from the internet company. Google reports search trends over a period of time weighted on a 1-100 scale:Meanwhile, last week a spoiler-rich video clip, subtitled in Arabic, hit internet sites, according to reports. The movie, directed by Joe and Anthony Russo, stars an ensemble cast reprising their Marvel character roles: Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, Mark Ruffalo, Chris Hemsworth, Scarlett Johansson, Jeremy Renner, Don Cheadle, Paul Rudd, Brie Larson, Karen Gillan, Danai Gurira, Bradley Cooper, and Josh Brolin. “Avengers: Infinity War,” which also was directed by the Russo Brothers, grossed $2 billion at the box office worldwide. Two days after Disney/Marvel’s “Avengers: Endgame” premiered overseas, the superhero tentpole has been widely pirated — with copies popping up like weeds on multiple torrent and illegal streaming sites. While Disney can’t be happy about that, the piracy activity so far hasn’t derailed “Endgame’s” trajectory of having the biggest movie opening ever. And it’s also possible that many of the digital pirates accessing the illegal copies will wind up seeing it in theaters. The three-hour movie has already raked in $305 million in its first two days of global release in 46 markets, led by a record-breaking $154 million take in China. After a boffo $60 million in Thursday previews, “Avengers: Endgame” is slated to hit theaters widely in North America Friday with a projected opening-weekend box office of around $300 million — which would top “Avengers: Infinity War,” the prequel that garnered $257.7 million in the first three days of its release in April 2018.center_img Popular on Variety It’s very difficult to quantify the impact of pre-release piracy for movie like “Avengers: Endgame,” said Shawn Robbins, chief analyst at BoxOffice.com. The question is what portion of those people who streamed or downloaded illegal copies of the movie would not have paid anything at all — and how many will go see it in the theater anyway.“I’d postulate ‘Endgame’ has a higher degree of immunity than most films [to piracy] because it’s a movie that demands to be experienced on the big screen with an audience,” Robbins said.Disney’s global release strategy for “Endgame” — virtually day-and-date around the world — is designed to limit the appeal of pirated versions. But within hours of its debut in China, a low-quality video-cammed version of “Avengers: Endgame” was already in circulation on piracy networks. Since then, higher-quality copies have popped up. On one popular file-sharing site Friday, at least 13 different copies of “Avengers: Endgame” were being shared among more than 35,000 users. The piracy of “Avengers: Endgame” has “become an issue, but certainly not a crisis, with films debuting internationally ahead of domestic [release],” said Jeff Bock, analyst with Exhibitor Relations. “Disney, like every other studio, is obviously concerned, but with [‘Avengers: Endgame’] turning box office records into dust, I’m sure they’ll take it in relative stride.”Bock added, “If it had become wholly out of control, we probably wouldn’t see overseas audiences getting releases ahead of North American moviegoers.”The “decidedly nonevent nature” of the movie’s pirated copies will likely have a negligible effect on the box-office bottom line, said Paul Dergarabedian, senior media analyst at Comscore. “The film is already breaking global records left and right and the true fans will not want to see this film on the small screen until its legitimate home-video release,” he said. However, some industry observers believe piracy undoubtedly works to depress box office to some extent, and perhaps even more so cut into sales and rentals in the home-video window. “The huge proliferation of movie copies available on easily find-able and well-curated pirate services will have a direct impact on revenue,” said Simon Williamson, chief commercial officer of Friend MTS, a provider of anti-piracy services. ‘Spider-Man: Far From Home’ Gets Re-Release With New Scenelast_img read more

Lerna development team quickly reverses decision to block ICE Contractors from using

first_imgIt was only two days ago when Jamie Kyle, a Lerna Developer decided to modify the Lerna’s license to ban companies who are the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement ( ICE ) contractors from using the software. This decision has now been reverted by the Lerna Core team and Kyle has been removed from the development project. Now, any organization who wishes to use the Lerna software is free to use it. Kyle stated, on Wednesday, over Github how he has been deeply disturbed by ICE’s behavior with American immigrants and the companies who have collaborated with ICE “don’t have any licensing rights” and “any use of Lerna will be considered theft”. Daniel Stockman, a core Lerna contributor, removed Kyle from the project, yesterday morning and pointed out that the license change was a “rash decision” that was “unenforceable”. He also added that there were “several past violations of [Lerna’s] code of conduct” as there were instances when Kyle’s behavior was rude and impolite. As reported to Motherboard, Kyle thinks his removal from the team is a result of Stockman’s discussion of the issue with Microsoft employees. But, Stockman denied the characterization to Motherboard. “I think developers can be activists if they so choose, and I support tools and licenses designed to make this easier,” said Stockman. He also added that because he is willing to revoke the relicensing doesn’t mean that he is an ICE supporter, and described ICE as “monstrous” and “must be abolished”.
