Southland weekly award winners are nominated and voted upon by each school’s sports information director. Voting for one’s own athlete is not permitted. To earn honorable mention, a student-athlete must appear on at least 25 percent of ballots. Men’s Tennis Player of the Week – Ryuya Ata, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi – Fr. – Fukoka, JapanPicking up his second-straight weekly award, Ata took down UTRGV’s Alberto Mello 6-0, 6-3 in Wednesday’s 7-0 victory over the Vaqueros and improved to a perfect 6-0 in singles play with a 6-1, 6-2 decision against Louisiana’s Kacper Dworak on Saturday. Ata and doubles partner William Mottet edged out their Ragin’ Cajuns’ foes 6-4 as the duo moved to 3-0 on the year.center_img Ata earns back-to-back weekly honors after sweeping both of his No. 3 singles opponents and winning his lone top-line doubles match of the week to remain undefeated in his rookie season. The Islanders (5-1) ran their unblemished record to 5-0 with a 7-0 win over UTRGV before suffering their first setback of the season in a 5-2 loss to Louisiana. Women’s Tennis Player of the Week – Kei Kato, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi – Jr. – Tokyo, JapanKato improved to 5-0 at both No. 3 singles and No. 3 doubles with a 6-0 week without dropping a single set, beginning with a 6-1, 6-2 win over UTRGV’s Valeria Montero. After the Islanders dropped the doubles point and first two singles matches against Houston, Kato sparked a four-point surge that pushed them to a road victory over the Cougars. Kato and Honore cruised to each of their three doubles wins without surrendering more than two games in each contest. A&M-Corpus Christi opens a four-match stretch this week with a doubleheader against Prairie View on Tuesday before a Wednesday rematch with UTRGV. The Islander men wrap up the week’s play against UT-Arlington at noon Saturday. The A&M-Corpus Christi women will also take on Prairie View A&M for a doubleheader on Tuesday and host Texas A&M-Kingsville at 2 p.m. Thursday.
